The Moondoggies - Bogachiel Rain Blues (Live at the Mural)

Moon Doggies at Local 506 Thursday Night

This Thursday evening The Local 506 welcomes Seattle quartet The Moondoggies to the stage. Sculpting their recognizably bewitching yet powerful sound has been a labor of love for the young quartet who are now touring in support of their sophomore release, Tidelands.

Yo La Tengo - Today is the Day (television performance)

Yo La Tengo this Saturday and Sunday @ Cat's Cradle

One of few bands stand in the same category as Yo La Tengo. Known and adored for their cloudy musical adventures through love, death, and all other emotion boiling events, they have been praised by critics and risen to cult status by adoring fans. Since their formation in 1982 in New Jersey, Yo La Tengo (spanish for "I have it" or I got her") has sat comfortably in that imaginary roped off lounge with bands like Sonic Youth and Luna. Be sure to catch at least one night of their two nights at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro this coming Saturday and Sunday. I suggest giving their 2006 release I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass a listen if you have time.

The Walkmen - New Song off of Next Album (Live @ EnVent Chicago)

This week : The Walkmen @ Cat's Cradle Wednesday 1-12

Right around the time The Strokes were rocketing toward stardom as the symbol of a new awakening in rock music, that welcome change was also defined by a few other key young bands, including New York's The Walkmen.
Since their formation in 2000, the quintet has released six studio albums including the critically acclaimed Bows and Arrows which landed them a spot on the ultra popular teen mellow- drama The O.C. Their sound is reminiscent of that time in the early part of the last decade when distortion and hard down strokes in 5/4 time signature were mandatory; but The Walkmen's ability to isolate certain sounds and manipulate the musical atmosphere always put them ahead of the rest. Experimentation with folksier arrangements and the use of horns and older instruments have kept The Walkmen producing fresh sounds for us to enjoy.

Lisben, their latest record, released in September of 2010 impressed audiences and wowed critics.

Catch The Walkmen at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro Wednesday the 12th. Baltimore's Lower Dens will open.

Whitey Morgan & The 78's "Bad News"

Whitey Morgan and the 78's @ The Pour House tonight

Celebrate the new year at the Pour House this evening with Flint, Michigan's very own honky tonk outfit; Whitey Morgan and the 78's. I fondly remember their rendition of Van Halen's "Runnin' with the Devil" from the countrified cover album Sucking in the 70's , released on their first record label Smalltone. These Midwestern outlaws put on one hell of a show laden with pedal steel and fiddle, so get your boots on and head down to the Pour House tonight.
