Phish / Upcoming shows at Cat's Cradle

Phish is making their triumphant return to Walnut Creek this Thursday night. By all accounts the Vermont quartet is back in full swing after a much needed hiatus. Front-man and guitar virtuoso Trey Anastasio fell into some drug problems a few years ago, bringing the band and fans down to a level of discomfort and fatigue. Phish came back with a vengeance two years ago and have since resumed their position at the tip top of the live rock / jam scene.

This week at the Cat's Cradle:

Friday July 2nd - Islands with Steel Phantoms and Active Child

Sunday July 4th - Arguably the best bass player in the world, Bela Fleck and the Fleck Tones Bassist, the one and only Victor Wooten

Monday July 5th - All the way from Long Beach, CA the Delta Spirit with Nashville's David Vendervelde and The Romany Rye.

Friday July 6th - Dayton Ohio's grittiest, The Heartless Bastards with Portland's The Builders and the Butchers and Peter Wolf Crier

Saturday July 10th - Raleigh's own Chatham County Line with Birds and Arrows

Recommended Listening:

Victor Wooten: "Amazing Grace"

Delta Spirit: "Motivation"

Heartless Bastards : "The Mountain"

Chatham County Line : "Route 23"

Saturday NIGHT!

New Orleans' very own Dirty Dozen Brass Band are performing at The Cat's Cradle Saturday night. Last time I saw them the show began at 4:00 am and ended at 7:00. I think one guy was playing a trashcan lid at one point. DDBB are proud ambassadors who perfectly represent the raw, gritty funk which comes only from The Big easy.

All seven of Carboro's Dexter Romweber and The New Romans (including the back up singers and Dexter) will play with Raleigh's Countdown Quartet @ The Local 506 Saturday night as well.

And last but certainly not least, Drughorse Collective presents: Max Indian, Ryan Gustafson, and The Bright Young Things @ The Raleigh Music Hall.

Langorne Slim is one hell of a singer songwriter with a voice that stretches beyond the normal range and hits you right in the heart. Catch him @ Cat's Cradle Wednesday night with Harper Simon.

Harper Simon : The Audit

Also on Wednesday night you can put on your jean shorts and head to Walnut Creek and rock out to Styx, Foreigner, and special guests Kansas!

The Connells - '74-'75

Raleigh Amphitheater's Grassroots Grand Opening: Celebrating the Past, Present and Future of Raleigh Music in Raleigh

The warmly welcomed Raleigh Amphitheater is kicking off its residency downtown this Friday night with a handful of bands from the area. The Connells are headlining, as they should. Who else best represents our great city, Clay Aiken? Other acts include Small Ponds, Mosadi Music and more. This event warms my heart, as it truly is something we can all be proud of and excited about. Having an outdoor music venue downtown is going to do wonders for this city.

Full schedule:

5:20 to 5:50 Th' Bullfrog Willard Mcgee
6:00 to 6:25 The Small Ponds
6:45 to 7:10 Sleep Control
7:30 to 7:55 Old Avenue
8:15 to 8:40 Mosadi Music
9:00 to 9:35 I Was Totally Destroying It
9:55 to 10:55 The Connells
